The owners of this residence originally lived in Warrandyte in a very picturesque hilly bushland setting. Their home had recently been threatened by bush fires and they had faced the harrowing experience of being told to evacuate. This was the impetus to make the decision of never facing another traumatic summer like that. so the decision was made to move to Cardigan and closer to aging parents.
The new home needed to be energy efficient and feel like hilly Warrandyte. So the first challenge was how do we make a flat level block in Cardigan feel hilly ? We create a dwelling on many levels to create many different perspectives of the same view.
Energy efficiency and comfort where key requirements. The building Originally had large external areas clad in brick, later revised to a rendered extruded polystyrene panel, improving the external insulation plus a high level of wall cavity insulation, double glazing, concrete slab (for thermal mass) and north orientated living areas for solar access, as well as eave designed to allow for solar access during the winter months and for shading during the summer months ensure a high level of occupant comfort year out, as well being energy efficient.
The residence has three distinct zones. Zone 1 consisting of an open plan living area, dining, kitchen/pantry and store room. Zone 2 for guests, consisting of a living room, two bedrooms with walk in robes, bathroom, separate toilet and laundry. Zone 3 consisting of a library/office, master suit, ensuite and walk in robe.
Zone 3 was elevated to create a hilly perspective and an undercover carport.
The construction is a mix of light weight corrugated iron, rendered extruded poly styrene panel and natural timber with very neutral colours.
